Embrace the light of the coastline or landscape.

Have you ever stood and looked across a vast coastline/landscape and felt completely in awe of your surroundings?  It’s natural to want to capture those feelings, absorb the view, and preserve the fleeting moment. While a photograph can serve this purpose, an artist's true aspiration is to translate that vision onto canvas through paint.

Painting the horizon connects us to something greater than ourselves. It's that thin blue line between heaven and earth.

This is what you will explore in Paint the Light, an experimental seascapes painting course for artists who want to capture the beauty and expansiveness of our amazing coastlines, or landscapes.

I’m excited to start this journey with you.

Do you struggle in your art practice?

  • Afraid to get started (not sure where to start or finish!)
  • Overwhelmed by the vastness of the landscape
  • Not confident at sketching
  • Fear of making mistakes
  • Working outside in public view

It doesn’t need to be this way...

With coastal artist Tracey as your guide, you can develop the right mindset to ally any fears of getting it 'wrong.'

In art there is no such thing!

Imagine how expressive your art will become if you are able to capture the energy, and colour of the sea, the sky, the land and the light in your paintings.

Walking boots on, and rucksack full of art supplies on her back, Tracey has been observing the North Norfolk coast for over a decade. She has developed a range of techniques that will help you to find a way to become fully expressed in your own artwork.

In this course Tracey breaks down her methods step by step. You can follow along in your own time without feeling out of your depth.

What is this course about?

Paint the Light is an online course for artists with a passion for coastal art, seascapes, or landscapes.

This techniques-based course will help you broaden your repertoire of skills and deepen your knowledge of mixed media to create beautiful paintings.

You will be in the capable hands of Tracey Ross, an experienced artist who specialises in painting light filled, harmonious, semi-abstract coastal landscapes.

Whether you choose to work in the open air, or from photographs, this course will help you to build a cohesive body of artwork.

Through Tracey’s encouraging teaching style, the course will help you to overcome any fear of a blank canvas and begin to incorporate a variety of mark making, mixed media and sketching exercises to build up your artistic ‘vocabulary’.  You will be layering on textures and paint to add a richness, depth and ethereal quality to your paintings.

Here's what you'll get

The course will take you on a 4 week journey of art development. There will also be a live and interactive weekly Q&A session.

Week 1 - Sketching

The aim of this week is to feel confident about getting outside to sketch, weather permitting. There is also the chance to work from photographs if needs be!   You'll acknowledge the challenges that this can bring and start your art exploration, creating marks to capture the atmosphere and beauty of your surroundings.

Week 2 - Exploring Colour

Learning to mix colours is a basic skill to learn and vital for self-expression. You'll explore a variety of nuanced colours, mixed from a limited palette, to communicate the mood and emotion we feel as artists.  In this week Tracey shares her personal palette, demonstrates colour mixing exercises and touches on colour theory, to help you gain colour confidence.

Week 3 - Techniques

This is a week with plenty of 'a-ha' moments!   You’ll explore mixed-media in depth, and learn how to best apply it to enrich your work with exciting layers and textures . Tracey shares skills and experiences that she’s acquired over years.  There’s a lot to try out.

Week 4 - Bringing it All Together

Armed with a fresh toolkit of techniques at your disposal, you can build on and develop your skills, your way. It’s time to face any fear of the white canvas head on.  Use this week to apply what you’ve learned and enhance your compositions, making them uniquely yours. Developing your artistic voice in the process.  By the end of this week you should have a body of work to be proud of.

The course contents includes items such as video lessons, images, forms, lists and other text (any of which may be listed on the platform as 'Lessons').

What it's like to work with Tracey?

Paint the Light came about when the requests for a convenient online course became too loud and too frequent to ignore from Tracey's students and followers.

Previous students from this online course have this to say:

Stella A

“I think it was a good course and you were very generous in the information you provided on your process. You are a really good teacher - you were able to break down your process to small bites, easy to digest and fun to do along with you.”

Antonia C

"I thoroughly enjoyed Tracey’s course ‘Painting the Light’. It was so inspiring to see the behind-the-scenes shots of Tracey working in her studio. We saw the whole process of developing a painting, from sketching plein-air out on the beautiful North Norfolk coast, which provides her inspiration, to seeing the various ways in which she builds the different stages and layers until she’s happy with the result. Tracey’s approach is carefully guided step by step so that by the end of the course you have gained new ideas, experimented with some different techniques and hopefully ended up with two or three finished pieces."

Donna G

"It was recommended Tracey's online course, and I was so glad I did. The content in the videos is vast and I keep going back to them, as there is access to the course for a year. Having Tracey available for the zoom calls was invaluable and she is incredibly generous with her time and knowledge.

I have learnt to be brave and sketch outdoors (even got photographed recently as 'an artist in action'!) and the tips Tracey provides for this are so helpful.

My paintings have improved so much using the techniques Tracey demonstrates in her course. My work is freer, has greater depth and I feel a truer sense of self as I continue to explore the landscape and develop my painting style.

I have shown my work to a gallery, which I wouldn't have done without Tracey's wonderful course! What a confidence boost!"

Meet Your Art Coach

Hello! I’m Tracey

"For years I’ve been observing the North Norfolk coast, bringing everything I know to create paintings to cherish and enjoy. It’s the place I spend a lot of my time walking with my sketchbook observing and drawing. It is a place where I feel a connection, a sense of presence. I then reflect on the studies once back at my studio surrounded by views of undulating countryside."
"I invite you to join me on this online teaching course.  I will share techniques I have learned while painting these wonderful coastlines."

"You will receive my teaching and knowledge in digestible steps, in a four part, easy to follow series.  The video lessons and demos will be released each week on Monday mornings for you to watch and learn from.  There will be practical exercises for you to complete, and weekly interactive sessions with me every week (Thursday) online for the duration of the four week course. I can’t wait to watch your art practice blossom and grow as we take this journey together."

This course is a good fit, if you:

  • Want to create stunning landscapes and seascapes full of light and texture
  • Want to learn how to use acrylic paints and explore mixed media
  • Are ready to take that leap of faith and be more expressive in your art

This course is not suitable, if you:

Want to paint pure abstracts

This course not an abstract course it  is about exploring the horizon in a semi-abstract way.

Expect to paint in a realistic style with lots of detail

We are not aiming for photo-realism in our work, but rather expressive and impressionistic experimental paintings.

Don't like acrylic paint

We will be working mainly with water-based acrylics and mixed media, due to their versatility and quick drying times.

Take the leap!

Do you find yourself making excuses with your art practice?

We all have blockers, and fears big and small that can hold us back.
Now’s your chance to respectfully set the excuses aside, and take the leap into a new way.

Here lies your invitation to join a supportive community of artists and painters to learn and create art together…The choice is clear, stay as you are, or expand your skills.  Paint the Light is yours for the taking.

This is a techniques-based course, for curious artists on their art journey.  It is suited to artists with some painting experience, however, you do not need to have much experience to take the course, as I cover a lot of the basics to help beginners to improve their skills.  More experienced painters will enjoy learning the personal techniques and processes as a springboard to help improve and develop their own art journey.

Is this an abstract course?

No.  It is a semi-abstract course.  Our compositions will be based on real observation, with the horizon as our focal point.

Is there a money-back guarantee?

We are making every effort to ensure that this course is right for you and meets your expectations.  However, if you are not happy towards the end of the first week, and the course is not a good fit, then you may request a refund within 6 days of the first module release.

How will the course be delivered?

The course will be delivered on a platform called Podia. Having signed up there will be a period of ‘onboarding’ while you gather your supplies.  The course itself starts on Monday 22nd September when the content for Week 1 will be released. Each Week will be accompanied by a live Q&A on the following (Thursday). The course lasts for 4 weeks and after the 4 weeks you will have access to the course material for one year.
